Like the tailgate party, the Gatorade Shower (aka Gatorade Bath or Gatorade Dunk) is a ritual unique to American sports.
Legend has it that in 1985, when the New York Giants beat the Washington Redskins, Giants’ defensive tackle Jim Burt was angry with coach Bill Purcell and encouraged Harry Carson to dump a bucket of Gatorade on the coaches head.
Purcell went on to be dunked 17 times during the Giants’ 19986 season – culminating in Super Bowl XXI.
Since then, it has become a tradition to dunk a large cooler filled with ice and sports drink over the head of the coach to celebrate a momentous win. The honour can often also befall a star player, team owner or often a hapless sports reporter in the middle of a post game interview.
